History
of Bates Stamping
The judicial system, even when provided with power and
prestige, used to suffer a great deal from various case
documents. Lawyers and court clerks alike have to sort
documents out manually to verify their significance allowing
them to implement the law accordingly. Of course, these are
basic requirements entailing the prestigious jobs of our
lawyers. With the advent of the Bates numbering system
however, even the menial task of marking documents
automatically became a real innovation for lawyers and the
entire judicial system.
The history of Bates stamping begins with the Bates
Manufacturing Company, situated in New Jersey. The company
started this simple yet revolutionary idea of using a
specialized numbering system and had its initial efforts on
making handheld automatic machines originally in New York
City, on the month of September 1890. However, after
dominating the corporate shares in stocks, Edison Phonograph
Works took over the manufacturing projects of the company
for five full years, from 1892 to 1897.
Even with the remarkable changes in operation and
management, Bates Manufacturing Company continued with the
innovation and eventually, officially served as the
marketing agent of different office supplies, numbering, and
line-dating machines. Unfortunately, the corporation did not
live long when it finally terminated its services in 1922.
Now, Ebay advertises and sells the rare pieces of Bates
numbering machines, which were patented from 1891 to 1893.
But even with this selling of historic pieces, one thing is
sure: the technology that the former Bates Manufacturing
Company has innovated will continue bringing significant
developments in legal systems.
